In January Franklin Music Magnet was named one of six SPPS Arts Partnership
Program sites for 2007-08. We received $5000 to create an
arts infusion project in collaboration with the VocalEssence/WITNESS School program.
Discovering Duke Ellington has been an exciting year-long arts participation project that brought African American teaching artists, Roxane Wallace and Danielle Daniel, to our school.
They helped bring Ellington’s music and persona to life for Franklin students
through dance and creative storytelling. Students also spent extensive time researching the life of Duke Ellington using information from our web site, and created podcast "commercials". This fall students in Choir, Band and Orchestra, and the Friday Enrichment group produced "The Duke Ellington Radio Show"and performed it at the December Instrumental Music Concert. It is our sincere hope that these intentional arts experiences will
create lasting learning connections for the students and teachers of
the Franklin Music Magnet community.
