Franklin Music Magnet and

The American Heart Association

are partnering to create

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

Your Physical Education Department along with the American Heart Association is teaming up to create a valuable service learning opportunity for our students. Tentatively on March 27, we will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart.

This event will provide your child a memorable and rewarding experience while learning about the importance of Physical Education and daily physical activity. A number of studies show that increased physical activity is linked to better school performance.  Regular periods of moderate to vigorous physical activity enhance the health, academic performance, attitudes and classroom behavior of students.

While encouraging community service, it is also an educational program.  Messages of staying tobacco free, eating right and exercising as a lifestyle choice are reinforced.  Students have the option of raising funds through this event which are critical to the development of lifesaving research.

Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s volunteer efforts by making contributions.  Your student has been given a collection envelope for that purpose.   Checks for all donations should be made payable to the American Heart Association and submitted by March 24.  As a 501© status non-profit organization, donations are tax deductible.

Your child can even raise funds on-line!  Step by step instructions about our simple on-line donation program are provided on the back flap of the collection envelope.

This event gives students the unique opportunity to connect service with learning.  Students will learn about and celebrate the importance of physical education while developing skills of citizenship and the importance of supporting their community.

When this event is over, the benefits will be overwhelming.

©       Our students will have benefited from sustained activity on the day of the event and in preparation for the Jump Rope for Heart Event.

©       Our students will have learned a lifetime sport that can be used to improve fitness and coordination as an individual or with friends.

©       Our students will have participated with classmates to reach a common goal.

©       Our students will have learned about heart disease and stroke and how it can be prevented.

©       Our students will have contributed to the fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke, the #1 and #3 causes of death, by being an active participant in this program.

Thank you for your participation in this event.  We think this is a valuable cause and service learning project and it would not work without your support.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer that day, please call me.

Sincerely,
