Kindergarten
An Introduction to Franklin's Kindergarten
Our full-day kindergarten program at Franklin allow the  students to learn and experience many things. Small class sizes allow teachers to listen to, and intereact with, the individual child. At Franklin we have many hands-on activities for the children because we believe that children learn best through doing, not just listening.

Every day at Franklin, the kindergartners work on literacy skills through the use of Writer's Workshop and also through the use of themed activities. The children have time to write daily starting, in the fall, with creating stories through the use of pictures and developing into writing words and then sentences by the end of the school year.  The children hear multiple stories daily and have activities geared to enhance their understanding of the story and its characters.

We have math instruction every afternoon and use the Everyday Math curriculum, and its activities, to teach the concepts of numbers, counting, patterns, shapes (both 2-D and 3-D),  time, money, graphing, measuring,  symmetry, addition, subtraction, and more.

The kindergartners at Franklin each have a "Book Buddy" who comes to read with them every week.  Each student and Book Buddy spend about 30 minutes together reading and discussing books.  Many of our Book Buddies have been coming for several years, or more, and are very good at interacting with kindergartners. It is fun to see the faces of both the Book Buddies and the students light up when they see their partner!

Kindergartners at Franklin use the computer lab weekly, using programs to enhance literacy and math skills. They become familiar with the computer keyboard and use it to label pictures, write sentences and even begin writing simple stories.

Each kindergarten child, with the permission of their parents, can take Suzuki violin lessons from our instrumental music teacher. They learn the basics of violin and, beginning in January, are allowed to bring the 1/8 size violins home to practice.

Kindergarten is a fun place to be. If you'd like to have a tour of the school and see the kindergartners and  staff  in action, please contact either Mrs. Holmquist Burks, our principal, or Mrs. Wert, our secretary, and set up a time to visit.
